Roman fort was way smaller than I assumed

I was reading a report on Vindolanda last week. The whole fort only fits inside a single soccer field. Crazy to think 1000 soldiers lived and worked in that space. Anybody else surprised by how compact these ancient structures really were?

Wait they actually had NO space to move around in those things? Thats crazy to think about with how much gear they had to carry everywhere they went. Bet they had to time their breathing just to avoid elbowing each other in the face constantly.
