Pro tip: never trust a perfectly intact pot from a surface dig

Found this gorgeous Roman pot sitting on top of a plowed field in Norfolk last Thursday, pulled it out clean as a whistle, and it basically crumbled to dust in my hands before I even got it to the car - has anyone else had that happen with seemingly good pottery finds?

That 'crumbled to dust' part... yeah. Found this old clay pipe bowl in my grandad's shed. Looked solid. Picked it up and it just turned to grit. Like it was waiting to die.

Man, I used to think that kind of stuff was just old junk sitting around, no big deal. But then my uncle handed me this rusty old harmonica from his dad's stuff, and I blew on it and it just fell apart in my hands. Completely changed how I see old things now, like they're just barely hanging on. Yours with the pipe bowl sounds exactly the same, just waiting for the wrong touch to let go.
