Lost a 2000 year old pot fragment during a dig in New Mexico last month

I had just uncovered a nice piece of Anasazi pottery near Chaco Canyon and accidentally knocked it off my tray into a dry arroyo, any tips for keeping small artifacts secure on site without slowing down?

Oh no, that's rough losing a piece like that after all the careful work to uncover it. I've been there with a similar oops moment on a dig and it sucks lol. For keeping stuff secure without slowing down, try using those small stacking trays with high sides or even a shallow cardboard box lined with foam.

Wait, are we really putting this much drama into losing a rock? It's archaeology, not rocket science, stuff gets dropped all the time.
