Kicked myself for ignoring the old curator's tip on cleaning Roman coins

Last summer, the head curator at the local museum told me to never use distilled water on bronze Roman coins because it strips the patina. I thought she was being overly cautious and tried it on a cheap dupondius I had. Totally ruined the surface, turned it this weird bright green color. Now I stick to dry brushing with a soft toothbrush like she said. Has anyone else messed up a find by not listening to an expert?

Doesn't it just make you cringe thinking back on that kind of mistake?
