Hit 500 pieces of Roman pottery from one field in Somerset last week

Didn't think that little patch of ploughed dirt would cough up that many shards, especially after 3 years of walking it. Anyone else get a surprise count like that from a spot they thought was tapped out?

Well, what's next, do I need to bring a shovel and start looking for the actual kiln underneath that field? Seems like your luck is holding out a bit too well for it to just be random scatter. Maybe the Romans knew you'd be walking that spot and decided to leave you a little stash to keep you entertained.

Oh wow, that's a solid haul from one field! I mean, it makes you wonder if that spot was actually a pottery dump or something back in the day, not just random scatter. Maybe the Romans had a little repair station or kiln waste pile there that's been mixing into the plow zone for centuries. Could be worth checking if there's any wasters or kiln furniture mixed in with those shards, that'd tell you a lot.
