During a road trip, a rest stop showed me history in the rocks

We were crossing Arizona and stopped at a random overlook. The cut in the hill had stone flakes and black marks from fires long ago. Makes you feel small, thinking about who was there before, doesn't it?

That "feel small" thing hits home. I once dug up a perfectly preserved glass milk bottle from the 1940s in my backyard planting tomatoes. It was just sitting there, this thick blue glass. Spent the whole afternoon wondering about the kid who drank from it and if they ever thought about someone finding it decades later. Weird how the past just pokes through like that.

Ever find something that just stops you in your tracks like that? I was hiking in New Mexico and spotted a piece of pottery sticking out of the dirt... it had these faded geometric patterns. Cleaning it gently, I could see fingerprints baked into the clay from whoever made it. That got me reading about the ancestral Pueblo people who lived there. Now I keep it on my shelf, and it reminds me how everyday stuff outlasts us all.
