Compared LiDAR scans with old school trenching on a dig in New Mexico
Ngl I always thought LiDAR was this magical shortcut that would make digging obsolete. But last summer on a site near Santa Fe we tried both approaches on the same grid. The LiDAR picked up some faint outlines of structures we missed with the naked eye. But the old school trenching actually found the pottery and bone fragments that told us the date and culture. Honestly I think you need both because the tech gives you the map but the physical digging gives you the story. Has anyone else found that combining old and new methods works way better than just one?

Wait you actually hand dug after LiDAR showed the outlines?
