Appreciation post: that park ranger who corrected my burial mound theory

Overheard a ranger at Cahokia Mounds tell a kid those aren't 'random hills' and it made me realize how easy it is to project modern ideas onto ancient stuff, so I spent the next hour actually reading the placards instead of just snapping photos - anyone else had their assumptions wrecked by a simple sign or comment?

Yeah, those aren't 'random hills'... my friend thought the same thing at someplace in Colorado, said they were just old mining piles. A ranger overheard and started explaining how they were actually ancient ceremonial sites. He was so embarrassed he didn't take any pictures the rest of the trip.
