Vent: A backyard in Boise had a maple fused to a fence post, never seen roots grow through steel like that

I was doing a removal estimate on a 40 year old silver maple last Tuesday and the tree had grown clean around a chain link fence post, so we had to cut the post out in 18 inch sections with a Sawzall before we could even touch the trunk, has anyone else dealt with a tree that just swallowed something man made?

That "grown clean around" part got me, how long had that post been sitting there before the tree decided to claim it? I've pulled old barbed wire out of oaks before but steel that thick getting fully swallowed is something else. Was the post still doing its job or was it just a skeleton inside the trunk by the time you got to it?
