The way people top trees instead of thinning them is driving me nuts
I was up in a 40 foot oak last week in a neighborhood in Raleigh and the homeowner pointed to a branch and said 'just cut it off level with the trunk.' That's not how trees work, people. Topping leaves stubs that can't heal right and invites rot. I see it all the time in new subdivisions where guys get cheap. It stresses the tree way more than a proper crown reduction or selective thinning. I've been doing this for almost 10 years and I still have to explain to clients that a tree isn't a hedge. Has anyone else had a hard time convincing homeowners to leave the pruning cuts to the pros? What's your go to way to explain it?

Ha, like they think trees are just big bushes with chainsaw instructions.
