That one comment about my wedge cuts saved me a 400 dollar mistake

I used to cut wedges way too big on stuff over 12 inches, thought bigger meant faster fall. A guy I sub for in Cleveland watched me hinge up a maple and said 'you're leaving no hinge meat, it's gonna barber chair'. Took it to heart, now I aim for 1/3 depth max and recut if the wedge looks fat. Last week it saved my ass on a leaning oak that would've split the butt and wrecked a fence. Anyone else get a piece of advice that felt annoying at first but now you can't work without it?

That wedge advice is solid, but 1/3 depth is too much on a fat leaning tree, drop it to a quarter.
