Ripped a huge limb off a red oak last Tuesday in Brookline

I was doing a removal behind a house on Harvard Street and a limb about 14 inches across decided to peel off and crash through a fence. The owner came out yelling before I even got my saw started. Took me three hours to patch the chain link and clean up the mess. Has anyone else had a tree just break apart on you like that during a simple prune job?

Used to think oaks were solid, but this changed my mind lol.

No way, wait - you're telling me a hollow oak tree can just... stay standing like that? I've been around trees my whole life and I always figured solid wood meant solid all the way through, not a shell with nothing inside. That's wild, almost makes me wonder how many other things I've been wrong about in the woods.
