Question about treating a huge pin oak with a cracked trunk

Last month I got called to look at a big pin oak near a driveway in St. Louis, maybe 60 feet tall. The owner wanted me to just cable it, but I noticed a deep crack running down the main trunk from an old storm wound. I ended up recommending a reduction prune instead of a full crown clean, and the difference in how the tree moves in wind is night and day. Has anyone else dealt with a trunk crack that looked minor but turned out to be the main issue? I'm curious if you'd still cable it after a reduction or just monitor it for a season.
