Lost a whole Saturday to a bad stump grinder rental in Ogden

Rented a 35hp stump grinder from the big box store for $280 and it kept stalling on any stump bigger than a dinner plate. The teeth were duller than a butter knife and they had no replacement parts in stock. I ended up hand-digging three stumps with a Pulaski, which took 9 hours. Anyone else had luck with local equipment shops instead of the chain rentals?

My buddy in Layton rented one from a local place, Cache Valley Equipment or something like that, and he swore by them. He had a massive old cottonwood stump, maybe 4 feet across, and that machine chewed through it in under an hour. Said the guy even threw in a sharpening kit and walked him through the blade angle before he left. The chain store gave him a machine with a cracked belt once and blamed him for it, so he never went back. I think it cost him a bit more, like $60 extra for the day, but he said it was worth every penny compared to the headache you had. Local shops actually test their stuff before they hand it over, in my experience.
