I finally caught someone topping a 100-year-old oak and it made me wonder if we are too quick to condemn crown reduction as a valid practice
I get that topping is usually bad news, but in my experience a proper reduction cut on an old tree can sometimes save it from splitting in a storm where a full crown thinning would not, so has anyone else found a case where a little reduction actually out performed the textbook approach?

Worst case of bark inclusion I ever saw was saved by a reduction cut like that.
