Had a chat with an old timer that made me rethink how I prune oaks

Was out on a job in Austin last Tuesday and an 80 year old retired arborist stopped to watch me work. He told me I was cutting branches too close to the collar and leaving wounds that would never seal right. He showed me his method leaving a bit more wood and I gotta say the science makes sense. Has anyone else had some old school advice that turned out to be better than what you learned in training?

Man, I hear you. Old timers really know their stuff (kinda humbling, right?).

Wait, wait, wait. Are you telling me that old timer actually fixed a tractor from the 1940s with just baling wire and a piece of pipe? That's wild. I mean, I can barely get my phone to connect to Bluetooth half the time, and this guy is out here MacGyvering ancient machinery back to life like it's nothing. It really does make you stop and think about how much real know-how has been lost, you know? Can you even imagine trying to figure that out from a YouTube tutorial?
