Chatted with a city forester in Boise about their new tree pit soil mix

She said they swapped to a 70% sand and 30% compost blend for better drainage and root growth, which honestly makes a lot of sense for our clay-heavy area. Anyone else using a specific mix for urban planting projects?

70% sand? That seems crazy high to me. I'd worry about it not holding any water or nutrients at all. I guess it must work for their specific soil though.

Honestly jana_lewis16 has a point, that mix sounds wild. Sand drains way too fast for most stuff. They must be growing cactus or something that hates wet roots. Tbh I'd kill anything I tried to plant in that.
