Bought a $340 Silky vs my old $40 Corona for limbing oaks in Austin, and I feel dumb about the money
So I run a small crew here in Austin and we do a lot of live oak pruning, and for years I've just bought the cheap Corona hand saws, you know the $40 ones from the box store, and just gone through a couple a season because they get dull or the blade bends. Back in March I finally caved and bought a Silky Sugoi for like $340 with the sheath, and I figured it would be nicer but not THAT different. First big trim job off South Lamar, this huge live oak with maybe 30 limbs to take down, and I swear I finished the whole thing in about half the time and my shoulder didn't ache at the end of the day. The pull is just cleaner, it doesn't bind up in green wood, and the kerf is way thinner so you're not fighting the tree. Thing still rips through stuff after four months of daily use, whereas my old Coronas would be dragging by now. But here's my hangup, is it actually worth eight times the price for a crew saw that could get dropped or stolen off a truck, or am I just paying for the logo? Curious what you all run for day to day limbing and if anyone's found a middle ground saw that cuts close to the Silky without the sticker shock.
