Washing machine flooded a whole basement, customer blamed me for not catching it sooner

Job last Thursday in Minneapolis. Old Maytag washer, customer said it was making a grinding noise. I get there, pull the pump, find a sock jammed in it. Replace the pump, run a test cycle, everything looks fine. I leave. Two hours later they call screaming that their basement is under an inch of water. Drove back, the drain hose had popped off the standpipe because the clamps were rusted through. I checked the hose when I was there and it looked seated fine, but I guess one good spin cycle was all it took. Now their insurance is involved and I'm waiting to see if I get dragged into it. Anyone else had a situation where a secondary failure that you didn't touch ended up biting you? How do you protect yourself on stuff like this?
