My kid asked why I fix things instead of just buying new ones

I was working on a 12-year-old dryer in my garage, and my daughter said her friend's family just throws stuff out when it breaks. She asked if my job was going away because of that. It made me think, are we really raising a generation that sees repair as a waste of time? What do you tell your own family about what we do?

My buddy's kid said the same thing about his old truck. He took him to the junkyard to find a part and the kid's eyes lit up when they got it running. Now that kid wants to learn everything.

Oh man, that's exactly how it happens! My nephew was totally bored by my project car until I let him help me swap out the alternator. The second that engine turned over, he was hooked and started asking a million questions about how it all worked.
