Chat with a old timer the other day about compressors
Guy who's been doing this since the 80s said he never replaces a compressor on a fridge over 8 years old. Just tells the customer to buy new. Got me thinking about all the time I've wasted fighting with old units. Anyone else draw a hard line on age?

Oh man, that's pretty much exactly what a buddy of mine ran into last year! He spent a whole weekend wrestling with a 10 year old fridge compressor, replaced all the parts, did a perfect job (or so he thought), and then it died again two months later. The customer ended up being way more mad the second time because they'd already paid for the repair and had to shell out for a new fridge anyway. My friend calculated the hours he wasted on that job and realized he could have used that time to install two new refrigerators and made twice the money. He told me he has a strict "no compressors past 7 years" rule now, no exceptions, and he says his customers actually appreciate the honesty (and the lower frustration). He'd rather lose a small job than risk his reputation on a ticking time bomb, you know?
