A retired tech told me I was wasting time on diagnostics, and I can't stop thinking about it
I ran into a guy named Walt at the supply house over on Foster Ave two days ago. He did appliance work for 31 years before he hung it up, and we got to talking while we both waited on a part. I mentioned I'd spent almost 90 minutes chasing a weird intermittent fault on a dryer, swapping out a thermal fuse and then a control board before I finally traced it to a chewed wire behind the unit. Walt just laughed and told me that back in his day, the old timers pulled the machine out and looked at everything with their eyes before they ever touched a meter. He said a good flashlight has saved him more time than any tool in his bag, and I'll be honest, that stung a little. Here I am at 12 years in, and I still jump straight to testing parts instead of just slowing down and looking first. I keep replaying that dryer job and wondering how fast I would have found that wire if I'd just checked it before ordering anything. Any of you older techs got a rule like that, something you always do first before you pull out the meter?
