A retired guy at the parts counter saved me $400 on a fridge compressor

Last week I was about to order a new sealed system for a Samsung fridge after the compressor failed. An old timer named Hank at the supply house told me to check the inverter board first. I almost ignored him because the compressor was clearly dead silent. But I tested the board and found a blown capacitor for $3.50 at a local electronics shop on Elm Street. Fridge fired right up after swapping it. Anyone else ever get handed a golden tip from a random parts guy that saved your whole day?

Whoa, I gotta respectfully disagree here. Hank's advice was solid but you still ended up fixing a fridge, not diagnosing a compressor that actually failed.

Dang, I gotta push back a little here. I had a buddy who did this exact thing for his old fridge, followed the same steps, and the compressor was totally fine until it just quit on him six months later. He was so proud of fixing the temp issue, but the whole time the compressor was slowly dying and he had no clue. He ended up having to trash the whole fridge because the compressor went bad, and he coulda saved the headache if he'd just tested it properly upfront. So yeah, sometimes Hank's advice gets you a quick win, but it doesn't mean you actually dodged the real problem.
