Vent: My bokashi bin got moldy after just 3 weeks in the closet

I started a bokashi system last month because everyone says it's perfect for small spaces. But by week 3, this white fuzzy mold took over the top layer. I followed the directions exactly - drained the liquid every 2 days and kept the lid sealed. Honestly, I think the pre-made bran mix I bought from a local shop in Austin was just too old. Has anyone else had a bin go bad on them even when you did everything right?

Man, that white mold sounds like the lactobacillus was trying to do its thing but got knocked off balance... I had a similar thing happen when I used some old bran from a co-op in Dallas and it just never kicked off right. You probably need to toss that batch and start fresh with a new bag of bran from a spot that moves product fast.

Yeah it's funny how that same principle applies everywhere. Fresh ingredients just work better, whether it's bread starter or sourdough or even just buying produce from a busy market instead of the dusty bin.
