Just realized my neighbor's $8 bokashi bucket beats my two year old worm bin
I set up a worm bin in my 400 square foot studio about two years ago and I was sure it was the best way for apartment folks to compost. Then my neighbor Priya in unit 3C showed me her bokashi setup and I kind of had to admit she was onto something. Her whole system is two buckets stacked with a lid, about $8 at the Asian market on Bellaire, and she ferments everything including meat, dairy, and bones, stuff I could never put near my worms. My bin has been a real pain the past three months because the worms keep trying to climb the walls whenever it rains and I get fruit flies no matter how deep I bury the scraps. Last Tuesday I opened my bin and found a soggy mess because I overfed it watermelon rind during that hot stretch in July. Priya's bucket just sits in her closet, takes up a corner, and she buries the finished stuff at her mom's house once a month. I keep hearing that bokashi is more work because of the bran and the draining, but honestly I am draining worm tea every week anyway. Has anyone here actually run both systems side by side, and did the bokashi get sour on you in the Texas heat?
