I gave up on the big plastic bin and switched to a worm tower
I had a standard 5-gallon bucket composter in my kitchen for about six weeks, and it was just a wet, smelly mess no matter how much brown stuff I added. A friend lent me her stacked worm tower setup, and within a week it was breaking things down with no odor at all. The airflow from the stacked trays made the whole difference. Has anyone else made a switch that fixed a major problem for them?

Honestly, I stuck with my bucket and just drilled way more holes in the sides and bottom. Got the airflow right and it dried out the mess. Sometimes the fix is free, you know? Why buy a whole new system when a cheap drill bit can solve it.

Yeah but drilling holes can backfire if your soil mix is wrong. You'll just drain all the water and nutrients before the roots can grab them. It's a balance, not just more holes.
