Bokashi bins seemed like a gimmick but my third batch of scraps actually broke down into something that didn't smell like trash

I kept seeing people swear by bokashi in apartments but after two failed tries with moldy rice and rotten egg smell I was about to toss the whole bucket. On the third attempt I started layering the bran thicker and pressing down harder to squeeze out air pockets and now I've got a bucket of fermented scraps that's nearly ready to bury. Has anyone here actually dug bokashi pre-compost into a planter box without issues?

Did you rinse the bran off before layering? That might be your issue.
