Vent: I used to buy every old brass piece I saw, now I bring a magnet and a loupe to every flea market
I used to grab any brass candlestick or door knocker that looked old, and I ended up with a garage shelf full of plated junk that flaked after a year. After a dealer at the Round Top show in Texas showed me how a magnet grabs plated steel and a loupe reveals the casting seam on fakes, I changed my routine overnight. Now I carry a small rare earth magnet and a 10x loupe in my coat pocket and check every piece before I pay. Has anyone else built a little inspection kit like this, and what else do you keep in it?
