Serious question, why does everyone in this hobby treat 'patina' like it's automatically a good thing?
I was at a flea market in Columbus two weekends ago and watched a guy pay $75 for a rusty hand plane with a cracked tote, and the seller kept saying the rust was 'honest wear.' I get that some age marks tell a story, but a cracked tote is broken, not charming, and that plane will never cut a clean shaving without a full restore. Honest wear on a tool means a worn sole from actual use, not orange rust eating through the iron. I passed on a $20 plane in better shape from the same booth and the seller looked at me like I was crazy. Am I wrong here, or is the patina thing mostly just a way to charge more for stuff that needs work?
