Flea market vendors keep calling every rusty hand plane a "rare Civil War era tool" and it is driving me nuts
I have been hitting the same flea market in Columbus for about 3 years now and I swear every other booth has a beat up Stanley hand plane with a $75 tag and a sign saying it is from the 1860s. Here is the thing, you can date most of these by the markings on the cutter alone, and 9 times out of 10 the stamp says something like "STANLEY" in a straight line which means it was made after 1920. I picked up a No. 4 last month for $12 because the seller did not bother to clean the rust off, and the frog and lever cap told me it was a Type 19 from the 1940s. A real pre 1900 plane will have a low knob and no patent dates on the cutter, and those usually sell for way more than $75 when they are legit. It matters because new folks walk in, pay $75, and end up with a user grade tool they could have grabbed for $15 at a yard sale. Does anyone else have a trick for spot dating these things without pulling out a phone in front of the seller?
