Took me three evenings to finally find a ghost town called Dover on a 1870s map of Kansas
I kept scanning for something labeled Dover in the usual spots where maps put towns but it turned out the surveyor wrote it in tiny cursive right on a river bend, hidden behind a crease, and I only spotted it after I held the map up to a window at sunset.

Actually Kansas wasn't a state until 1861, not the 1870s.
