I used to think old maps with weird spellings were just errors, but a librarian in Portsmouth showed me a 1976 atlas where the same town appeared three different ways across pages. She explained it was one cartographer copying from an older source and another from a local survey, so nothing was wrong, just mixed. That convo made me rethink how I read every antique map now, and I actually started cross-checking county lines instead of judging the text. Has anyone else had a moment where one odd spelling changed how they date a map?
