The 1887 map that lied about a whole town in Vermont
I pulled out a county atlas from 1887 to trace an old mill road near Montpelier and found a town called 'Rutledge' that showed up on three different plates, so I drove out there last weekend to look for cellar holes. There was nothing but a pine grove and a stone wall, turns out the mapmaker copied the name from a neighboring state's plat book that never existed here. Has anyone else found a phantom place on old maps that just straight up never was there?

I used to trust old maps blindly, but your Rutledge find changed that real quick.
