That moment I realized river names shift on old maps within 30 years
I was comparing a 1854 map of the Ohio River near Cincinnati to one from 1882, and the main channel name for a stretch had literally moved to a different branch. It wasn't a typo, the sandbars and islands redirected the flow that fast. I mean, I knew rivers moved but I never thought about how mapmakers had to keep updating the names for what counted as the main river. Has anyone else spotted a river name jumping between branches on their maps, and do you trust the older one or the newer one more?
