I finally learned why my map edges kept tearing after a guy on here called me out
Someone in this group replied to a photo I posted of my 1880s county map and said my edges were tearing because I was storing them folded in a flat drawer without any support. They told me to use archival foam core boards between each map and stop stacking more than three high. I thought they were being picky at first, but I tried it with a $15 set of foam boards from an art supply shop near me in Portland. After six months, I pulled out a map I hadn't touched since and the edges were completely intact, no new rips at all. Now I trim the boards to match each map size and it takes like five extra minutes but saves me so much frustration. Has anyone else had a simple storage tweak fix a bigger problem for them? I am curious what other folks do for old folding maps specifically.

A buddy of mine had the exact same issue with his vintage road maps.

Yeah I learned that one the hard way too... by tearing a $200 map in half.
