My friend in the anime club said I watch the wrong shows

I was talking to this guy named Mike at our anime club meeting last Tuesday. He said I only watch mainstream stuff like Attack on Titan and My Hero Academia. Then he told me I'm missing the whole point of anime as a medium. It hit different because he wasn't being rude, he just sounded disappointed. Now I'm trying to watch some older shows from the 90s he recommended. Has anyone else had a friend call out their anime taste like that?

Nah, gatekeeping what shows are "right" to watch in anime is pretty silly. Plenty of folks got into the hobby through mainstream stuff and that's totally fine.

Haha, you're right. I'm totally guilty of that whole "gatekeeping" thing sometimes. I remember thinking I was so cool for watching some obscure show nobody's heard of, but really I just started with Naruto like everyone else. The truth is, if I was honest about it, the only anime I should probably be gatekeeping is the stuff I actually finished, which is maybe three shows because I have the attention span of a goldfish. Did anyone else start with something super mainstream too, or am I the only one who's been humbled by my own terrible taste?
