My brother called anime 'cartoons for grownups who can't let go'

He said it after I made him watch the first 3 episodes of Vinland Saga. I got defensive at first, but then I realized he has a point about how some shows lean way too hard on teenage drama. Anyone else have a family member who just doesn't get your taste in shows?

Oh man, I've been through this exact thing. My dad said something similar after I tried showing him Attack on Titan. The trick is to not force the heavy stuff right away. I started my brother on something like Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood because it has a solid story without the weird anime tropes he hates. Maybe pick a show that's more like a regular drama or thriller first, something with zero fan service or high school settings. What genre does your brother normally watch on his own?

@andrew_sanchez94 makes a good point about matching a show to what someone already likes. If your brother watches a lot of crime dramas or historical shows, try something like Monster or Golden Kamuy that has a similar feel without the usual anime baggage. Taking the time to pick a show that fits his actual taste makes a bigger difference than trying to defend the whole medium at once.
