Hot take: I looked up the actual sales numbers for Attack on Titan vs. My Hero Academia and it's not even close

I was browsing this site called Sakugabooru last Tuesday and stumbled on a post that broke down the total Blu-ray and manga sales for both shows. Turns out Attack on Titan has sold over 100 million copies worldwide combined while My Hero is around 65 million. I always hear people online saying MHA is the bigger modern hit but the numbers don't back that up at all. Am I missing something or do people just talk louder about one over the other?

Actually the Attack on Titan manga alone is over 100 million, the whole franchise including spinoffs and such is way higher than that. But My Hero isn't that far behind if you count digital sales too, some of the recent numbers put it closer to 85 million worldwide now. The Blu-ray gap is the real difference though, AoT sells way more in Japan on physical media.

That part about the Blu-ray gap really made me rethink things, @tyler_hernandez. I always figured My Hero was catching up fast since it's so huge with younger fans online, but I guess that physical media money in Japan is a bigger deal than I gave it credit for. It makes sense though, AoT has that prestige feel that gets people to actually buy the discs. I honestly had no idea the manga numbers were that close either, I thought 100 million was still way out of reach for My Hero. Guess I need to pay more attention to the breakdowns instead of just the headlines.
