Had the worst anime watch party ever last Friday

I planned this whole night with my friends to watch the new season of that fantasy anime everyone's talking about. I made snacks, cleared my schedule, even set up my TV just right. But my buddy Dave kept pausing every 5 minutes to complain about the animation style, saying it looked too smooth and lost its soul. Then my other friend Sarah started scrolling her phone during the big fight scene and missed the whole plot twist. I tried to get them back into it but they just argued over whether the original manga was better. We barely made it through 3 episodes before everyone left. It's so frustrating when you want to share something you love and people just can't enjoy it for what it is. Has anyone else had a group watch go completely sideways like this?

Isn't complaining about the animation style kind of a valid take though?

Used to think it was just nitpicking, but a few recent shows actually changed my mind on this. The animation in that new season is so stiff and lifeless, the action scenes barely move. It's not about wanting something fancy like a movie budget, it's that the quality is visibly lower than what they used to make. There's a real difference between a stylized choice and just being cheap or rushed. When the story and characters are good, the bad animation pulls you right out of it. It's a fair thing to call out when it's that noticeable.
