Finally changed my mind on the whole sub vs dub debate after watching a fansub from 2005

I used to be a hardcore sub only guy and thought dubs were for casuals who couldn't read fast enough. Then I found this old fansub of a show I love from 2005 and the translation was SO weird it completely changed my mind. The translator added these random memes and changed character names to fit American jokes from back then. That experience made me realize that subs can also be totally wrong or outdated compared to a proper studio dub with a real script. Now I watch both and just pick whichever has the better acting and translation for that specific show. Has anyone else ever run into a fansub that was way more inaccurate than people want to admit?

Found an old fansub of Gurren Lagann from like 2007 once. They changed Simon's name to "Steve" for the first three episodes. No joke. Just random American names inserted everywhere. They also added a "This is SPARTA" joke during a big fighting scene. Completely took me out of the show even though it was supposed to be serious. Ruined the whole emotional weight.

Man I had a buddy named Chris who found a fansub of Lucky Star from like 2008 that had this one guy doing all the voices. Chris said the translator just gave up halfway through episode 4 and started writing stuff like "Konata says something about anime, idk" in the subtitles. Then during a scene where they're at the shrine, the subs just said "please clap" and "jazz music stops" for no reason. He still talks about it like it was a crime against humanity.
