TIL the hard way that drilling into a hot wire changes your whole approach to live testing
I was at a job last Tuesday in a old house in Phoenix, wiring up a Vista 20P panel. I thought I'd save time by not shutting off the breaker for a zone expander install. Drilled right through a 120V line feeding the smoke detectors and blew a hole in my bit. Spark flew, customer yelled from the kitchen, and I sat there shaking for a good minute. That one mistake convinced me to always use a non-contact voltage tester before I drill into any wall, even if I think it's empty. Anyone else ever get burned by rushing on a panel install?

Man, that bit about the "customer yelled from the kitchen" really got me. She must have heard that spark pop and then saw the whole house go quiet for a second. I've had a similar moment where I was wiring a new outlet in a rental and hit a live line with a screw tip. The jolt went up my arm and I dropped the screwdriver, and the tenant came running in with a fire extinguisher. It's a sick feeling in your stomach that sticks with you for days. You're right about that non contact tester, it's saved me more times than I can count since then.

Read that article a while back about how many electricians skip the testers because they're "sure" the breaker's off. Scary stuff considering how easy it is to get distracted for one second. My buddy's dad lost two fingers to a 220 line because he trusted his gut instead of a $20 tool. Always feels like overkill until it's not, right?
