Pro tip: a retired installer in Boise showed me the 3 inch rule for keypads and it fixed my callbacks
After 2 callbacks in one month on a house in Meridian, Idaho, an old installer named Walt asked if I was mounting keypads at 48 inches like everyone else, then said his rule is 3 inches below the deadbolt so kids and wheelchair users can both reach it. I switched to that height on my next 6 installs and haven't had one complaint since. Curious if anyone else uses a set height rule or do you just match the existing switches?

Walt's rule makes sense, I picked up something similar from an old timer here in Nampa. He told me to measure off the deadbolt every time instead of just going off the floor, since floor heights vary room to room anyway. Been setting mine 3 to 4 inches below the bolt for about two years now and the callbacks dried up. Matching the existing switches works fine on remodels but on new builds I just use the deadbolt trick and nobody ever complains.
