Hot take: the $40 phone line surge protector I skip on 9 out of 10 panels saved a customer's whole system last month
So I was reading the installation manual for a DSC Neo panel about a month ago, just killing time in the truck between jobs in Plano, and there was a line buried in the appendix saying that phone line surges account for something like 15 to 20 percent of all fried control boards. I had always figured lightning hitting the house was the main killer, not the phone line coming in from the pole. A couple weeks later I was doing a service call on a house off Coit Road where the board was totally dead after a storm rolled through, and sure enough the phone line was the only thing that got hit, the grounds were all clean. Customer had no surge protector on the line because the original installer skipped it back in 2011. Swapped the board, added a $40 Ditek on the phone pair, and he has been fine since. Now I at least offer it on every panel swap even if most folks say no. Any of you got a go to surge setup on phone or coax lines that actually holds up?
