Saw something at the small airport in Bend that made me stop my truck

I was dropping off a client near the private hangars last Tuesday and saw a Cessna 172 with its cowling off, sitting outside in the rain. The mechanic had left a full set of tools, including a torque wrench, on the wing. It was a light drizzle, but that's still moisture on steel and aluminum. I know you guys have your own systems, but leaving gear out like that in the open seems like a fast track to rust and calibration issues. Has anyone else seen this kind of thing at smaller fields?

A buddy of mine watched a line guy at a tiny strip in Idaho refuel a Piper with the fuel cap just sitting on the wing... right before a gust of wind sent it skittering across the tarmac into a storm drain. They spent two hours with a magnet on a string trying to fish it out. Plane was grounded for a day waiting for a new one. Just a total avoidable mess.

It's that same casual carelessness you see with people leaving their nice stuff out in the rain.
