Realized I was torquing my own oil pan drain plug by feel for 6 months
Was doing a routine 100 hour on a Cessna 172 out at KAPA last Tuesday and grabbed the torque wrench for the drain plug like always. Something felt off so I checked the log from the last oil change and saw I'd been going hand tight plus a quarter turn for like 6 months straight. Turns out my elbow calibration was about 40 inch pounds off the whole time and I got lucky nothing seeped. Anyone else ever catch themselves skipping the wrench on stuff they do all the time?
Man, 40 inch pounds off is wild when you think about how small that torque spec actually is on those plugs. Kind of makes you wonder how many other "every time" jobs turn into muscle memory and your body just stops paying attention.
