Overheard a new guy say 'every torque spec is just a suggestion'

I was showing a fresh A&P how to use the manual for a flap track job on a 767, and he told me he usually just tightens things by feel. I pulled out the actual mfg spec for a 12mm bolt and watched his face go pale when he saw it's supposed to be 450 inch-pounds. Any of you vets had a rookie try to wing it on critical hardware?

nah wait, you're telling me that bolt actually snapped? like clean broke in half?
