Noticed a huge difference in engine deposits after switching oil brands at 50 hours
I pulled a cylinder off a Lycoming O-320 last week and was shocked at how clean everything looked inside. My buddy runs the same engine but uses a different brand of oil, and his had way more carbon buildup on the piston rings after about the same runtime (around 300 hours). Has anyone else seen big changes like this between oil brands on these small aircraft engines?
My O-320 hit 200 hours on Aeroshell and looked fine, swapped to Phillips 20W-50 and saw zero difference at 400. Carbon buildup on rings is usually more about how you lean the mixture than the oil brand in my experience. Ngl, I think people overthink this stuff, just pick a good spec oil and run it.
