Why does everyone cram their air fryer baskets full of fries?

I keep seeing posts where people pile frozen fries to the brim, then complain they come out soggy, but after 3 tries with a single layer at 400°F for 12 minutes, mine turn golden every time, so have you guys actually tried giving them space?

Yeah that "single layer is key" advice gets thrown around but people still pile them up. The thing is, even if you do a single layer, you gotta shake the basket halfway through or the bottom ones still steam instead of getting crispy. I just do a single layer and give it a good shake at 6 minutes and they come out perfect every time.

and honestly, @andrewh95 is spot on about the shake thing. I do the same at the 5 minute mark but I also give the basket a little tap on the counter before I open it, just to knock off any loose crumbs. that extra step really helps keep things from sticking together. ngl, I used to skip the shake and wonder why my fries came out soggy on one side. now I set a timer on my phone so I never forget.
