Warning: don't just spray oil directly into your air fryer basket
I kept getting a weird burnt smell and uneven cooking, and I finally figured out it was because I was spraying avocado oil straight into the hot basket. The spray hits the heating element and burns. Now I toss my food in a bowl with a teaspoon of oil first, then put it in. My Brussels sprouts come out perfect every time. Has anyone else found a better way to get a light, even coat of oil?

Honestly the pastry brush is a great idea, but I find it uses more oil for me because it soaks into the bristles. Tossing in a bowl feels wasteful at first, but you can use that leftover oil in the bowl for the next batch. The real trick is getting the oil amount right so it's just a light film. I've started using my hands to rub the oil on things like potato wedges, it's messy but you get total control.

Yeah, that burnt smell thing is exactly what happened to me. I started using one of those little silicone pastry brushes to spread a tiny bit of oil on the food itself before it goes in. It feels like it uses less oil than tossing in a bowl and gives a really even coat.
