PSA: I just realized I was preheating my air fryer wrong for 2 years

I always preheated with the basket empty but last week I saw smoke pouring out and found a burnt piece of old breading stuck under the heating coil, so now I preheat with nothing in it at all and check the bottom first - has anyone else had this happen or am I the only one who missed that?

That's an interesting take, but I actually think you might be overthinking it. The whole point of preheating is to get the basket and coil up to temp, and checking for debris every time sounds tedious. I've had my air fryer for three years and always preheat with the basket empty, never had a fire issue. Just give it a quick visual scan once a week and you're good.

Wait @christopher594, aren't you supposed to check the basket before preheating every time? Even a tiny piece of foil or breadcrumb can smoke up bad, I learned that the hard way.
